Chairperson:

Geoffrey Geiger, Head of Private Equity Funds and Co-Investments, USS

Details:

This seminar discussed valuations in private markets given the changes in valuations across listed markets. We looked at different asset classes and consider the areas of concern as well as those where investment may still offer opportunities for return, diversification or as an inflation hedge. Speakers also considered the impact of higher rates.

In addition we considered the operational issues for DC pension funds investing in private markets and looked at how policy initiatives and funds’ own initiatives are improving access.

  • How are valuations in private markets changing and is there a lag compared to listed markets?
  • How do valuation policies differ and how quickly do these reflect market changes?
  • What is the impact of higher rates and are some private market asset classes experiencing a bubble that could be about to crash?
  • Discussion of private markets in DC pensions. Consultation update and case studies from DC funds using private markets: how are they overcoming the operational issues in pricing and liquidity?
