Exclusion, Engagement & Crisis Management – how can boards handle the relationship with fossil fuel/’toxic’ companies?

Date:

8 March 2022 12:15 to 15:30

Venue:

Het Slot Zeist, Zinzendorflaan 1, 3703 CE Zeist, Netherlands

Chairperson:

Daniël Sikkens, Independent Consultant

Details:

As APG becomes the latest pension fund to exclude Shell and other pension funds come under pressure, what are the issues for board members to consider?

In this seminar we looked at:

  • Exclusion – a quick win or sensible investment strategy? The pros/cons and impacts on the pension fund, company and wider society
  • Engagement – does engagement really work and what can it achieve? Is there a point when engagement becomes unviable?
  • PR management – How can you react to pressure from members or wider society? Do pension funds need a communications or crisis management strategy when pressure mounts?

As a broader point, we discussed what is the purpose of pension funds: are they purely managing members’ funds or taking a role in wider society? If the latter how do you determine the limit? Are there implications for investment in other sectors, tech and social media for example? How many companies/sectors can you/should you exclude?
