Role for Private Market & Illiquid Assets in DC Schemes

Date:

21 November 2023 11:45 to 14:30

Venue:

Brewers’ Hall, Aldermanbury Square, London EC2V 7HR

Chairperson:

Matthew Webb - London Stock Exchange Group

Details:

With the regulatory and government push towards encouraging DC pension schemes to investment in illiquid assets and private markets, we provided some practical guidance to trustees on how to make this work effectively for your scheme. Should schemes be investing in such assets and if so, how and what are the key issues and challenges?

  • Is there really any reason why illiquid and more complicated strategies such as private equity investments, multi-asset and illiquid credit, infrastructure and property cannot also be used by DC schemes?
  • Can they provide better diversification benefits and risk adjusted returns than the more typical DC mixture of just equities and bonds?
  • How do you deal with liquidity issues when investing in illiquid assets?
  • What is the right legal structure which would comfortably sit within a DC environment to be able to invest in such assets?
  • What issues should trustees be aware of, including Gating of Funds and Valuation/Pricing Issues?
  • What are the governance and regulatory challenges of using illiquid asset classes, especially in a DC Default Fund requiring daily liquidity and pricing?
  • With the creation of Long Term Asset Fund vehicle, does this help make investing in less liquid assets more accessible?
  • What is the role for productive finance and can DC schemes take advantage?
  • What additional Members communications issues do Trustees face when investing illiquid assets?
