Tom Arild Fearnley
Investment Director, The Ministry of Finance (Norway)
Tom has been Investment Director at The Norwegian Ministry of Finance since 2007. The Ministry is responsible for the management of the Norwegian Government Pension Fund. Tom is on the Supervisory Board of the Munich-based European Patent Office’s (EPO) pension reserve fund, valued at about 8 bn Euro. EPO is an international organisation. The fund is named Reserve Fund for Pensions and Social Security (RFPSS) From 1999 to 2007, Tom was Special Adviser at the Norwegian Central Bank / Governor’s Staff for Investment Management, advising the Central Bank's Governor and the Ministry of Finance on the investment strategy for the Petroleum Fund (now Government Pension Fund) and the foreign currency reserves. Prior to that he was for many years a physicist at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, and held academic positions at various European universities. Tom holds doctoral degrees in both Economics and Physics, having a PhD in International Economics and Finance from The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, University of Geneva (2002), as well as a PhD in High Energy Physics from Oslo University (1986). He also holds two Masters degrees, one in International Economics from The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, University of Geneva (1997), and one in Physics from Oxford University (1987). He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences and Mathematics from Oslo University (1979). Tom is a Member of EPFIF's Nordic Advisory Committee.
